The alleged haunted Southington home that has gawkers driving the residents crazy and horror fans excited was once just home sweet home for Congressman Chris Murphy.

Murphy rented the home, on which “The Haunting in Connecticut” is based, with two friends after he graduated from Williams College.

He and his friends shared the second floor between December 1996 and Summer 1998 and never had any ghostly encounters, his staff said.

In fact, they did not know the house had been a funeral home until after they moved in, he told the Connecticut Post.

"A plumber came by the second day we were there and was looking around and saying 'Wow, I've never been in the haunted house before,'" he told the Connecticut Post.  "We were floored but I don't think any of us were predisposed to believe the story. … None of us looked too hard for the ghosts."

"The Haunting in Connecticut" stars Virginia Madsen and is based on a family’s terrifying, real-life encounter with the supernatural.

The film hits theaters Friday and there is a free screening in Plainville Thursday night.

In the meantime, it’s created a nightmare for the current owner who says the house is not haunted and she’d sick of people stopping by and staring at her home.
