Ticks are more than just icky little pests that dogs and cats get in the summer time. Lyme disease, a tick-borne ailment has become almost as widespread as the AIDS epidemic.  Nice, huh?  Now it's time for the disease's close-up.

Under Our Skin, an Emmy-award nominated documentary and winner of numerous film festival awards including best documentary will be playing at Real Art Ways in Hartford from Friday, July 10 to Wednesday, July 15.

It will have you wondering about all those bug bites you scratch this summer.

According to the film’s website, “Under Your Skin is a powerful and often terrifying look at not only the science and politics of Lyme disease, but also the personal stories of those whose lives have been affected and nearly destroyed."

The documentary portrays the grueling truth about the tick-borne illness as it follows the lives and battles of long-time sufferers. It brilliantly shows the debilitating effects the disease and how our government silently controls everything from the diagnosis and misdiagnosis to the treatment (or lack there of) of the disease.

The film specifically criticizes the Infectious Diseases Society of America, which has affirmed that chronic Lyme disease does not exist and claims the symptoms are psychosomatic.

“Under Your Skin” proves just the opposite. Chronic Lyme disease is real, unavoidable and could be lurking in your backyard this summer.

Lyme disease was named after the Connecticut town of Old Lyme in 1975 where the first case was recognized.

Post-movie speakers will include discussions with Elise Brady Moe, Dr. Charles Ray Jones and Elliot Pollock whose stories are all featured in the film. Andy Abrahams Wilson, the director and founder of Open Eye Pictures production company will speak on Tuesday, July 14 following the 7:00 p.m. screening.

Tickets will cost $5 for members and $9 for non-members of Real Art Ways.
