Here is a look at celebrations throughout Connecticut this Veterans Day.
10:30 a.m.
A ceremony will be held in Coe Memorial Park in Torrington. Mayor Ryan J. Bingham will join veteran's organizations, local officials and other dignitaries with a presentation of a wreath, color guard, gun salute and the playing of taps.
10:45 a.m.
East Haven hosts Annual Veterans Day parade. It will step off on Thompson Street at the American Legion and goes to the Town Green.
11:00 a.m.
The Harwinton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7008 and local American Legion Post 137 will conduct a Veterans Day ceremony at the veterans' monument on the Town Green. As the names of this year's deceased veterans are called out, an American flag will be placed in front of the monument. A wreath will be placed and taps will be played. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in Community Hall across from the green.
Local
A Veterans Day ceremony will be held at Fanning Park, Jewett City. Guest speakers will be in attendance.
American Legion Post 180 in Lebanon will also host a Veterans Day ceremony. It will honor fallen veterans and include a flag disposal ceremony. Individuals who have unserviceable flags should bring them to the Legion Hall before the ceremony.
American Legion Post 194 and VFW Mattatuck Post 8075 in Prospect will conduct a wreath-laying ceremony on the Town Green in front of the Civil War monument. The flag will be raised by Cub Scouts.
All veterans are welcome to attend an observance at Oscar Swanson Park in Thompson. A luncheon will be held after ceremony.
The Waterbury Veteran's Memorial Committee Veterans Day ceremony begins on the Waterbury Green. A luncheon will follow. It is $12, Gold Star parents are free. To register, call (203) 753-4253.
The Watertown-Oakville Veterans Council will sponsor Veterans Day ceremonies The Water-Oak Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5157 will meet at the Veterans Hill gazebo at Veterans Hill and Route 6. The Oakville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7330 and American Legion Post 195 will conduct the program at the Oakville Green off Main Street. After the ceremonies the council will place a wreath at the monument at Veterans Memorial Park, Nova Scotia Hill Road. For information, call (860) 274-0717.
In Wolcott, a ceremony will be held on the Green. The event will feature participation by VFW and American Legion members.
In honor of Veterans Day, Post 111 in Woodstock will host a pageant at the monuments at Woodstock Hill. If it rains, the event will be in Palmer Memorial Hall.
Noon
Western Connecticut State University in Danbury will salute all those who served in the nation's military with a Veterans Day with a ceremony in Ives Concert Hall. Honor guards from the WCSU Police Department and the National Guard will be present. Dr. Jefferson Wiggins of New Fairfield, an educator, author and veteran of WWII, will give the keynote address. WCSU student Derek Roy, who is a member of the National Guard, will also speak. The second part of the ceremony will feature the presentation of a wreath of remembrance and reading of the Gettysburg Address at the flag pole outside Old Main, also on White Street. Refreshments will be provided in the first floor lobby of Old Main. Attendees who wish accommodations should call Deborah Cohen, coordinator of AccessAbility Services, at (203) 837-8946.
1:30 p.m.
Torrington Mayor Ryan J. Bingham and veteran service officials will visit Torrington Health & Rehabilitation Center at 225 Wyoming Avenue for a presentation honoring a disabled veteran.
3:30 p.m.
At Colonel Gates Veterans Cemetery in Rocky Hill, Governor Jodi Rell will announce plans to establish an official state veterans memorial.
