Huskies Hold Off Hoyas, 75-48

It wasn't pretty, but the Huskies bounced back from a loss over the weekend to Notre Dame to handle Georgetown Wednesday in Washington, DC, 75-48.

Senior Kelly Faris, who took responsibility for the team's defensive effort against the Irish, led the Huskies with 15 points. She also added five steals and four assists, but in her four turnovers was a microcosm of the game -- for both sides. The teams combined for 45 turnovers, 19 courtesy of UConn.

"Sloppy," Faris said after the game. "It spilled over into the second half as well. We've got to take care of the ball as a whole. We had way too many turnovers, and that killed us. We didn't get to the line as much as we wanted. We didn't rebound like we should have.

"Yeah, we won, but this is not the way we like to win."

Coach Geno Auriemma agreed.

"Right after the opening tip, it got sloppy," he said. "The first five possessions were a disaster, I thought. Things that I'm just not accustomed to. I was actually dumbfounded. I had no idea that I could ever see some of the things that I saw in those first five minutes of the first half, and it kind of set the tone."

The 19 turnovers was one shy of UConn's season high but the win marked the 52nd time the Huskies have won after a loss, dating back to 1993.

The only player on the roster who saw action and didn't register a turnover? Freshman guard Moriah Jefferson, who logged 27 minutes, scored 9 points and registered seven steals.

"If I play nervous, it's not good for me or the team," Jefferson said. "So tonight I just tried to come out and play a little bit different from what I've been doing."

Now 13-1, UConn travels to Marquette Saturday. Tip-off's at 4:00 p.m. ET.
