Huskies Land Top Recruit in '15 Class

Even for the back-to-back NCAA champion Huskies this seems ridiculous in the rich-getting-richer department: Katie Lou Samuelson, the nation's No. 1 player in the class of 2015, has made an oral commitment to UConn.

“She’s very excited,” Samuelson’s father, Jon, told SNY.com. “She and Coach Geno (Auriemma) built a great relationship and I think that she just really wanted to play for him.”

The news comes a week after 6-5 Georgetown Big East Rookie of the Year Natalie Butler announced that she was transferring to UConn. And several weeks after two other top players in the Class of 2015 -- Napheesa Collier and De’Janae Boykin -- made oral commitments to the Huskies.

Samuelson plays at Mater Dei High School (Calif.), which is also produced Kaleena Mosequeda-Lewis.

Katie Lou had a great visit at UConn this spring and just loved it,” Mater Dei coach Kevin Kiernan told SNY.com. “She wants to be the best and she feels UConn and Coach Auriemma can help her achieve that. Awesome day for her and her family. We are all very happy for her here at Mater Dei!”

Samuelson averaged 27.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game as a junior, helping to lead Mater Dei to a 27-3 record.
