Back in April, UConn unveiled new uniforms. In less than a week, we'll officially get to see what they look like on the 2013 Huskies football team.
“It was exciting to see many of our student-athletes modeling their new uniforms today, all featuring the primary UConn identity and new Husky Dog logo in various locations on the team uniforms," UConn athletic director Warde Manuel said at the time, via Nike.com. "Our student-athletes and coaches strongly believe that the new Husky dog logo boldly reflects our values and they are all very excited to wear it in competition and see it displayed prominently in our facilities.”
But not everybody loves the look. Take Michelle Lesniak, the Season 11 winner of Project Runway, and USAToday.com's Jeffrey Martin, who spent way too much time critiquing the new unis.
"Meh," Lesniak said. "The wordmark is important here - with 'UCONN,' there is no mistaking who we're taking about, but now it's official. The Husky Dog logo is a pleasant addition, neither menacing nor intimidating. What works for basketball, volleyball and other sports, though, doesn't seem to translate to football - the gridiron uniform is underwhelming. You'd expect more from a program with such a rich tradition."
Martin added: "I get it - clean and simple. Not too flashy... But if I was the opposing team, I wouldn't be intimidated. In fact, I think this uniform might be better suited for the U.S. Postal Service. I could get into that."
Both gave the uniforms one-star out of five (which, according to the key equates to "boring").
Whatever. We welcome the change and with it, hopefully, something other than another 5-7 season.
