  The London 2012 Olympics are over but you can bring a piece of the Games home. Everything from Olympic torches to relay batons, beach volleyballs and Olympic Village beds and power cables are going up for auction online, NBC News reported. Proceeds from the auction will “help subsidize the costs of the Torches to Torchbearers (torch relay) and contribute towards the staging of the Games," according to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.   The cream of the British music industry — including The Spice Girls, The Who, Take That, George Michael and the teaming of pop goddess Jesse J with the remaining members of Queen — rocked Olympic Stadium to close the London 2012 Games in a spectacular, joyful ceremony. Titled "A Symphony of British Music," the psychedelic celebration took spectators on a journey through the swinging sixties of Carnaby Street into 1980s new wave and onto the power ballads of the nineties before closing with rap and pop tracks that rule today's U.K. charts. In contrast to the opening ceremony, athletes marched together, not by nationality, thus allowing them to be free to enjoy the festivities as a united group. This tradition began in Melbourne, Australia at the 1956 Games and is seen as bringing the global athletes together as one nation. During these Olympics, Team USA averaged 116.7 points — just slightly off the Dream Team's record of 117.3 per game — and set the Olympic record with 156 in an 83-point victory over Nigeria. Now they have the gold medal. In a tight game from beginning to end, Spain and its star player Pau Gasol proved to be worthy opponents with a one or two point difference throughout the battle.   American Jake Varner Wrestles Unexpected Gold Medal From Ukraine

  American Jake Varner won the gold medal in the men's 96-kilogram freestyle division Sunday morning. Varner rallied to beat George Gogshelidze of Georgia 0-2, 1-0, 1-0 in the semifinals and he then beat Valerii Andriitsev of Ukraine in the finals. Varner, a two-time NCAA champion at Iowa State, became the second American wrestler to win Olympic gold in London, as Jordan Burroughs won the men's 74-kg freestyle on Friday night.   Uganda Wins 1st Marathon Medal, U.S. Comes in 4th

  
  Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda won the men's marathon Sunday in the last track and field event of the 2012 Olympics. Kiprotich won gold for running 26 miles and 385 yards in 2 hours, 8 minutes and .01 seconds. His is the first Olympic medal for Uganda in the marathon.   Medal Withheld From Korean Soccer Player After Political Display

  South Korea beat Japan for the bronze medal in soccer Friday and one of the winning team members thought a good way to celebrate was to hold up a sign saying that South Korea has sovereignty over some islands that Japan also claims. In response to his island agenda, the International Olympic Committee temporarily withheld Park Jong-woo's bronze medal and told his team to bar him from Saturday's medal ceremony.   Lithuania's Laura Asadauskaite Wins Women's Modern Pentathlon With New Olympic Record

  Lithuania's Laura Asadauskaite won gold in the women's modern pentathlon, with a final combined score of 5408 points, setting a new modern pentathlon Olympic record. Great Britain's Samantha Murray took silver with a score of 5356 points, and Brazil's Yane Marques earned bronze with a final score of 5340 points. The women's modern pentathlon is comprised of four events – fencing, swimming, riding, and a combined run/shoot event. At the end of the first event, fencing, Latvia's Elena Rublevska led the pack of 36 women competing. In the day's second event, swimming, Rublevska took 8th place, and Hungary's Adrienn Toth won the swimming event. Toth came in 5th place in riding, the day's third event, while Lithuania's Laura Asadauskaite came in first in the riding category.   Russia Takes Bronze, Wins First Medal in Men's Basketball

  Russia took the bronze in men's basketball Sunday, winning its first Olympic medal in the sport with an 81-77 win over Argentina. Russian player Alexei Shved, who recently signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves, scored 25 points, 13 of which were in the fourth quarter. After a wild scramble in the closing seconds of a very tight game, Argentina's players confronted the referees, screaming and shouting to no avail. One of the players threw the substitution clock to the floor. Russia, which came in ninth at the Beijing Games, came into the tournament an unlikely medal contender, but won their group in preliminary play and appeared on a collision course with the Americans before stumbling in the semis. This was probably the final game for Argentina's "Golden Generation," a team that became national heroes when they gave their country international basketball relevance by beating the U.S. in the 2002 world championships and then again at the Athens Games in 2004, when they won gold.   Italy took home its fourth men's volleyball medal in the last five Olympics by beating Bulgaria for the bronze on Sunday. The Italian team won 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, with captain Cristian Savani scoring a game-high 23 points. Bulgaria had been trying for its first men's volleyball medal since the 1980 Moscow Games when the team won silver despite team turmoil before the start of the London Olympics when the coach and several players quit the team.
