Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke was rescued from his burning car along the 101 Freeway in Calabasas. He first thought his car was having mechanical problems when it suddlenly burst into flames. A version of this story aired on the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Aug. 19, 2013.

Dick Van Dyke encountered a scary ordeal while driving his car in Los Angeles Monday.

The 87-year-old was behind the wheel of his Jaguar sedan when it caught flames while going eastbound on the 101 Freeway.

The CHP Southern Division tells E! News, "around 2 p.m. today we received a call that a car was on fire...there were reports that the person behind the wheel of the Jaguar was slumped over the wheel."

"We were told that there were nurses on the scene helping him. CHP and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the call," they added.

As the fire was being put out, several lanes were temporarily shut down on the freeway but were later opened.

"At no point did we call for an ambulance," the CHP further explained.

Erik Scott, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, confirmed that they responded to an automobile fire and hypothesized that "it is possible that a flat tire may have ignited and the car went up in flames."

No definite cause of the fire has been determined yet, however. But one thing is certain, the veteran actor and longtime Hollywood star was unharmed during the terrifying incident.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, firefighters assessed the driver and deemed that there were no injuries.

We're sure glad that he is okay!
