Jennifer Lawrence, Jay-Z Grace Their Own Covers in Time's 100 Most Influential List

For the tenth year in a row, Time Magazine has rounded up its list of the 100 most influential people for a special issue that hits newsstands on Friday.

This year, the publication did something different and gave seven honorees their own portrait covers, which is departure from the usual photo collage of all 100 people.

Jennifer Lawrence, Jay-Z and Sen. Rand Paul were among those who landed their own cover, as did Chinese tennis phenom Li Na, space entrepreneur Elon Musk, Bollywood star Aamir Khan, and teen Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai, who is recovering after being shot by the Taliban.

The cover choices and the profiles that populate the pages reflect the breadth and diversity of those who made their mark in politics, entertainment, science, sports and innovation, the magazine said.

"It's about the ideas and actions of people who inspire others," Time managing editor Rick Stengel told Matt Lauer on Thursday's "Today" show. "It's not about the influence of power, but the power of influence."

Other influencers -- without their own covers -- include newly-installed Pope Francis, North Korea's young leader Kim Jong-un, basketball star LeBron James, U.S President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and NRA boss Wayne LaPierre.

Time commissioned renowned photographer Mark Seliger for the portraits and the profiles were written by well-known people arguably as interesting as the list-makers: Justin Timberlake took on Jimmy Fallon, noting that "watching you laugh might be the thing that makes Jimmy most happy."

Hillary Clinton praised Obama for being "a leader who delivers" and "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm marveled at Bryan Cranston's ability to "turn Breaking Bad’s Walter White from a feckless, terrified father and husband to a ruthless, terrifying father, husband and crime lord."

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg wrote about fellow New Yorker Jay-Z saying that the rapper  is proof "that the American Dream is alive and well."
