Sean ‘Diddy' Combs Won't Face Felony Charges in Assault Case

Rap mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs will not face charges after he was arrested by UCLA police on suspicion of assault and making terrorist threats, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

The DA referred Combs' case to the City Attorney's office to determine whether any misdemeanor charges will be filed, DA's office spokesman Ricardo Santiago said.

There was no immediate word on why county prosecutors refused to file charges.

"We are thankful that the District Attorney rejected felony charges in this matter. This case never should have been part of the criminal justice system to begin with," attorney Mark Geragos said in a statement.

Combs was arrested last week for an alleged assault involving a weight-room kettlebell at the athletics facilities of UCLA, where his son plays football.

A source familiar with the case said Combs said he acted in self-defense, and that his son felt he was being bullied by a football coach. Combs said he held up the kettlebell to defend himself, a source told NBC News.

The source added that Combs had gone to talk to the coach, who did not want to talk to the hip-hop impresario. The source said that the coach wanted to call campus police and Combs said that he would call 911.

Officials did not say who was allegedly assaulted or what led to it. No one was seriously injured, police said. Combs' attorney did not immediately return calls from NBC seeking comment.

A rep for Combs Enterprises said Combs was defending himself in the incident.

"The various accounts of the event and charges that are being reported are wholly inaccurate," Nathalie Moar, a rep for Combs Enterprises, said in a statement to The Associated Press. "What we can say now is that any actions taken by Mr. Combs were solely defensive in nature to protect himself and his son."
