Terminally Ill ‘Star Wars' Fan Dies After Seeing ‘The Force Awakens'

Daniel Fleetwood, the terminally ill "Star Wars" fan who got to see "The Force Awakens" two months before the film's release, died Tuesday at age 32.

Daniel's father, Dennis Fleetwood, confirmed to NBC News that Daniel passed away Tuesday morning, just days after watching the unfinished version of the movie.

His wife, Ashley Fleetwood, posted on Facebook that her husband "is now one with God and with the force."

"He passed in his sleep and in peace," Ashley wrote. "He will always be my idol and my hero."

Fleetwood, of Spring, Texas, was diagnosed with a rare connective tissue cancer, called spindle cell sarcoma, two years ago. On Sept. 2, doctors gave him two months to live.

To grant him one last wish, Ashley posted a photo of her husband on Twitter with the caption, "#forcefordaniel help my man get his last wish, to see a screening of Star Wars before cancer takes him. @bad_robot."

The hashtag soon sparked an Internet-wide campaign and caught the attention of the film’s director, J.J. Abrams.

He allowed a private showing at the Fleetwoods' home on Nov. 5. The film opens on Dec. 18.
