“The Hunger Games” Barbie Doll in the Works

Companies like Mattel, Hasbro, and ABC Family claim their stake in the blockbuster hit

Following a record-breaking opening weekend, “The Hunger Games” franchise is expanding into toys and on the small screen.

Barbie Doll maker Mattel is in the process of producing a custom made collectable based on the heroine Katniss Everdeen, played by actress Jennifer Lawrence in the Lionsgate adaption of Suzanne Collins' novel “The Hunger Games.”

Mattel told The Hollywood Reporter that the doll was "created specifically for the adult collector.”

The Katniss Everdeen doll will be available for purchase on BarbieCollector.com and other retail channels. Images of the doll and a release date will be made available for collectors at a later date.

Hasbro Inc. also has a license to market toys based on the film.

In other “Hunger Games” developments, The Disney owned cable network ABC has landed the television rights to air “The Hunger Games” and the sequel, “Catching Fire”, which will hit theaters Nov. 22, 2013. The films will begin airing on ABC Family in 2014, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film’s success has led to the production of merchandise dedicated to the film including “Hunger Games”-themed nail polish, cookbook, and a workout class.

“The Hunger Games” soared at the box office opening weekend raking in a whooping $155 million in ticket sales nationwide. The film claimed the No. 3 spot for top opening weekends of all time, the IBTimes reported.
