Disney starlet Selena Gomez is now UNICEF's youngest Ambassador.

The 17-year-old singer and actress went to Ghana over the weekend for her first field mission, a trip was designed to allow her to observe the poor conditions in which some children -- lacking water, nourishment and education -- are forced to live, according to PopEater.

"I'm having such a wonderful time helping and learning about this culture and life!" she wrote on her Twitter page Sunday.

The teen idol documented her journey to the African nation that is ranked No. 30 out of 195 countries with the highest mortality rate of kids under five in updates and photos she uploaded to Twitter.

"I went to visit a tribe where the women gifted me with an outfit they hand made," she tweeted today. "Then I got to hold a new born."

Gomez will advocate and raise funds for the organization which aims to reduce the number of preventable child deaths. Clay Aiken, Lucy Liu, Alyssa Milano and Sarah Jessica Parker are among those who have been linked to the charitable organization in the past.

The brunette pop tart began her career acting on "Barney & Friends" and has since starred in a number of Disney Channel series and made-for-TV movies.
