Jon Stewart Applauds Obama's Gay Marriage “Evolution”

But the late-night host is not thrilled about the same-sex marriage ban in North Carolina.

On Wednesday's edition of "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart applauded President Obama's endorsement of same-sex marriage. He also offered an implicit mea culpa for initially doubting Obama's motives.

"We may have insinuated President Obama was somehow being disingenuous in giving in to his most base political calculations by not just saying he favors same-sex marriage and equal rights for all Americans—that his position is 'evolving' is weak tea."

But Obama proved his skeptics wrong when he announced on Wednesday that he believes homosexual couples should be allowed to marry.

Of course, as Stewart said, Obama's change of heart arrives one day after dispiriting news for gay rights activists: the passage of a constitutional amendment in North Carolina banning same-sex marriages and civil unions.

North Carolina's Amendment One, in Stewart's opinion, represents the "codifying of bigotry in — let's say the state where the Democrats are going to be holding their convention."
