Late Night Bids Adieu to Cain's Campaign

"Thanks for the memories," says Kimmel.

Late night's comics devoted Monday evening to eulogizing Herman Cain's halted presidential campaign — and looking curiously ahead to future frontrunners.

Jimmy Kimmel looked back at some of Herman Cain's most memorable Cain-isms — from his Libya flub to his gibberish to his sage advice ("take a chill pill") to his never-ending chants of "9 9 9" — with a wistful message: "Thanks for the memories!"

(What Kimmel said he really meant: Thanks for the material!)

And Jon Stewart, after getting in a few last jabs at Cain (and especially at his speech ending his campaign), looked forward to what was still to come in the GOP race:

Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich had said in an ABC News interview that he believed he'd be the GOP nominee. His reason: "I'm the guy who's been around forever," he said.

"That's Newt Gingrich's pitch: 'I'm the thing that has been in your pantry forever,'" Stewart joked. "'You don't remember buying it, yet you have no recollection of ever being without it. And now you have no choice but to elect it president. I'm Newt Gingrich, and I approved this message.'"
