Stewart pointed out that Romney appeared to be casting off his principles and beliefs to “copy Obama’s policy positions” in an attempt to appeal to moderate and undecided voters.
“Daily Show” host Jon Stewart was expecting Monday’s presidential debate to be a foreign policy “bloodbath,” and was stunned to discover that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was in fact “one of this year’s coveted swing voters.”
“I think Romney’s leaning Obama,” said a dumbstruck Stewart, referring to the GOP presidential candidate’s close alignment with many of the president’s foreign policy positions during Monday's debate.
Stewart noted early on that Republicans have criticized Obama’s "weak" foreign policy history. Stewart predicted that the final presidential debate would be a nightmare for Obama, but instead of sparing Obama’s foreign policy, Romney lauded – and agreed with – many of the president’s decisions.
To illustrate how closely Romney aligned himself with Obama, Stewart proceeded to show a montage of the two presidential contenders echoing similar views on Syria.
“It appears that all that’s left for the presidential race is just one model,” Stewart quipped. “I mean, at least we still get our choice of color, but it’s the same model!”
Referencing some of Romney’s contradictions, from the Afghanistan withdrawal date to the war in Iraq, Stewart pointed out that Romney appeared to be casting off his principles and beliefs to “copy Obama’s policy positions” in an attempt to appeal to moderate and undecided voters.
But Romney did highlight one quality that differentiated him from the president - his leadership style, which Stewart summed up thusly:
“Follow me! I’ll be right behind the president.”
