AT&T to Refund Customers for “Data Cramming” Charges

All 50 states, along with the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communication Commission, have reached a settlement with AT&T Mobility over allegations that the company charged customers for services for which they never signed up.

The extra charges, known as "data cramming," typically show up on a bill for $9.99 per month and are billed as services provided by a third party, such as horoscope readings, trivia and sports updates.

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen calls it a "deceitful practice that has unknowingly cost consumers for too long."

AT&T will be sending notices to customers who are eligible for refunds.

Customers can also check their eligibility on a special Web site set up by the Federal Trade Commission or by calling the Consumer Refund Line at 1-877-819-9692.
