A construction worker is dead after an I-beam struck him in the head on Wednesday morning.
Freddy Vasquez, 22, of Hartford, was working in the basement of a house under construction on Birmington Circle in Farmington around 9:30 when the accident happened.
A steal I-beam fell, hit him in the head and fell on him. Other workers were able to remove the beam, police said.
The man suffered massive head injuries and was rushed to a Hartford Hospital by helicopter, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The police and fire departments and OSHA are investigating.
New homes are going up in the neighborhood where the incident occurred.
Police have not provided his name, pending notification of his family.
In 2008, 5071 workers died on the job nationwide, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration. There were 28 in Connecticut and three of the people were construction workers, according to a report Connecticut Department of Labor’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health released in September.
