Girls play a scrimmage during Kara Wolters' basketball camp.

Kara Wolters annual Dream Big basketball camp is underway at Miss Porter’s school in Farmington. The 6th to 12th grade girls are practicing hard on the court and they’re excited to watch the USA Women’s Basketball team play for gold.

“I’m DVRing all of it,” Katie Heacox from Lakeville said, “hopefully my DVR won’t be full.”

Many of the girls at this week-long camp say being coached by current and former UConn players like Wolters is an incredible experience. Wolters was on the 2000 national team that cruised to gold in Sydney, an experience Wolters says she’ll never forget.

“First of all I can’t believe it was 12 years ago. It was the most amazing feeling in the world,” Wolters recalled.

Looking forward to this year’s team she believes with half the team comprised of former UConn players and UConn head coach Geno Auriemma at the helm they will win gold once again.

“The lucky advantage they have Is that they know Geno’s style so they’re very lucky in that respect.”

As for their first win against Croatia, “They struggled a bit the other night, they only won by 25. It was like a UConn win,” Wolters joked.

While many expect the team to come home with gold once again, Wolters notes that the competition on the international stage is tougher than ever before, “That’s why you play the game. Anything can happen."
