Mother Wants Answers After Sleepover Arrest

A Middletown mother is explaining why she called the police on a 71-year-old woman who kicked her son and his friend out of a sleepover and said the woman should have made sure the boys made it home safely.

"Furious isnt even the word, I was past furious," said Lynette Wiggins, who spoke exclusively to NBC Connecticut. "Something bad really could have happened."

Around 4 a.m. on Sunday, Barbara Aiello forced Wiggins' 11-year-old son and his friend to leave her grandson's sleepover at the Beacon Hills Condos, according to Middletown police.

"I can't see any reason why you would kick a 10- and 11-year-old out at 4 a.m. in the snow without even caring if they made it home," Wiggins said.

She claims the children wandered around the complex in 20-degree temperatures for an hour-and-a-half, trying to get back into their homes, but no one heard them knocking and they had no keys or cell phones.

"They went through woods. It's a busy street on the other side. Someone could have snatched these kids up," Wiggins said.

She said her niece eventually heard the kids at the front door around 5:30 a.m.

"He had pants tied to his head and a shirt tied to his face they were trying to stay warm."

NBC Connecticut spoke to Aiello on Monday and she said the boys were being too rowdy.

"I opened the door, not thinking, not realizing. I was angry and said, 'Go home,' and that was the last I had seen of them," Aiello said.

Now, Wiggins wants to know why Aiello never followed up to see if the children made it home safely.

"She could have put them in a vehicle and brought them home. She could have called me but she didn't."

Aiello is charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor. She is scheduled to appear in court next week.
