The leader of the Teamsters union that represents Sikorsky Aircraft workers said enough employees will likely volunteer for early retirement to avoid layoffs.

The Hartford Courant reports that Rocco Calo, head of the Teamsters local, said 900 employees are eligible for a buyout in areas targeted for downsizing.

Sikorsky, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., announced on Sept. 15 that the company is trimming its worldwide workforce of 18,000 by about 540 jobs to remain competitive.

The Stratford-based company employs about 9,000 workers in Connecticut. It did not say how many employees would be laid off in Connecticut, but U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro said 419 of the 540 jobs were in Connecticut.

Sales have increased nearly 40 percent and Sikorsky has expanded its workforce by nearly 59 percent since 2007. A spokesman said such increases cannot be sustained.

Calo says union workers' average hourly wage is $28 to $30.
