Electric Boat to Lay Off 104
Carpenters, machinists, pipefitters and sheet metal workers are affected.
More than 100 Electric Boat employees will be laid off.
Electric Boat plans to layoff 104 employees in the Groton shipyard in September.
The company notified the state on July 8, according to a report on the state Department of Labor Web site, and the layoffs will happen on Sept. 9.
The employees affected include carpenters, machinists, pipefitters and sheet metal workers, the company said in a statement.
This comes as a result of “a softening of the workload for the waterfront trades in the last half of the year,” the company said in the release.
“We have to align our workforce with our work requirements,” said Bob Nardone, Vice President of Human Resources & Administrationm, said. “The affected employees are assigned to areas where the workload is not expected to support the current workforce, making this action necessary.”
The announcement comes days after the company said it will hire hundreds of employees, double production of fast-attack submarines and accelerate design work for a new generation of ballistic missile vessels.
“Overall, the employment outlook at Electric Boat remains stable, although specific skill areas will be adjusted as the work mix changes,” the company said in a release. “The company continues to hire engineers to meet increasing workloads in the Design and Engineering organization, for instance.”
