President-elect Barack Obama called Nancy Reagan to offer the former first lady an apology for goofing on her during his first post-election press conference.

President-elect Barack Obama called Nancy Reagan to offer the former first lady an apology for goofing on her during his first post-election press conference.

President-elect Barack Obama's career was launched by his soaring oratory. So it's only natural that he found himself making apologies for comments made during his very first press conference since winning the presidential election.

After meeting with his economic team, Obama addressed a throng of reporters, one of whom asked if he had consulted with any former presidents.

"I have spoken to all of them that are living. Obviously, President Clinton. I didn't want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any seances," said Obama.

The remark was a goof on the former first lady's penchant for consulting an astrologer during her husband's administration.

Though the joke got a laugh from the press, Obama recognized it as unfair to Mrs. Reagan. He later called her to apologize for the remark, said spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter, who characterized it as "careless and offhanded."

  • Reaganus Californicus Sunday, Nov 9 at 9:19 PM FLAG COMMENT Weird comment... inappropriate, totally unnecessary and a wart on a otherwise excellent performance particularly since he has stated several times how much he admires Ronald Reagan...he's got a lot to learn
  • Chris Sunday, Nov 9 at 5:06 PM FLAG COMMENT its because Hillary held them for entertainment purposes and Nancy held them to advise her adled brained husband. Odd is the least of it.
  • Letty Saturday, Nov 8 at 11:35 PM FLAG COMMENT Why doesn't the media bother to mention the fact that Nancy Reagan never had any seances at the White House but Hillary Clinton did? Its very odd.
  • Rob DiRienzo Saturday, Nov 8 at 8:54 PM FLAG COMMENT This can be perceived as offensive, but I don't think the President-elect meant harm. No harm, no fowl.
