A new kitchen could put cash back in your pocket.
If you replaced an energy-guzzling appliance with a shiny new, more energy-efficient one, the state wants to reward you with cash.
Consumers could receive rebates of between $50 and $500 for upgrading to Energy Star-approved home appliances, all thanks to $3.4 million in federal stimulus funds that the state received. That should cover about 42,000 purchases, according to state documents.
If you bought an Energy Star-qualified refrigerator, freezer or room air conditioner, you could get back $50. Did you buy a clothes washer? That will give you back $100. If you installed a central air system, you could get back $500.
Connecticut is one of the first states in the nation to begin the appliance rebate program, according to Gov. M. Jodi Rell.
"The rebate program will give Connecticut consumers the opportunity to replace their old refrigerators, freezers, washers and air conditioners with energy saving appliances that will help them reduce their monthly bills," Rell says. "Shoppers can buy appliances from any retailer to replace an existing less efficient model. The program is coming online just in time for all the President Days' sales and that could help dealers with a big boost in their bottom lines as well," she said.
The rebate period starts today and runs through April 30. If funds are still available, the program will be extended, Rell said. It does not cover appliances you bought before Monday.
You can get one rebate per replaced qualified appliance and up to three rebates for room air conditioners.
This program complements existing appliance rebate programs offered by the major utilities in the state, Rell said.
The utility companies are partnering with the state Office of Policy and Management to administer this new appliance rebate program.
Information and appliance rebate forms can be found on the state's site and from the Connecticut electric utility companies.
