Apparently it "is" easy being green in New Haven

Nearly 200 people have applied to lead the city's new "green" agency -- called the Office of Sustainability, according to the New Haven Register.

Details on the finalists have not been released, but Administrative Officer Robert Smuts told the newspaper a candidate is expected to be selected soon.  The response was so overwhelming that the city has stopped taking applications and removed the job posting from its web site.

"Any resumes that came in, we wouldn't be able to get to," Smuts said.

The new Office of Sustainability will coordinate an array of conservation efforts, including changes to city recycling. "Obviously, the person will need to get a sense of stuff going on within the city, what's going on within the broader New Haven community. We actually have been doing a lot in terms of sustainability, but it hasn't been part of a coherent whole," Smuts also told  the newspaper.

The agency was created with a $1.3 million federal energy efficiency and conservation grant and  is expected to open as early as mid-February. The salary for the head of the agency will range between $57,000 and $93,000.
