Lyme Disease: There's an App For That!

There are so many apps, but so little time. Now you can add a Lyme Disease Tick map to your iPhone. For only $2, you can find out whether you’re surrounded by Lyme disease-carrying ticks.

Since Lyme Disease was discovered in the Connecticut town of Lyme in 1975, cases of the disease have skyrocketed in Connecticut and New York, reports the state's health department.

To prevent the spread of the disease, faculty and students at the Yale School of Public Health created the application.

“You can only get Lyme disease in certain areas, only by certain ticks, and only after a tick has remained attached for a certain amount of time,” said Durland Fish, a Yale professor of epidemiology who helped develop the idea.

The app uses GPS to point out how many infected ticks are in a particular area. It also comes with photos of what these ticks look like so you know exactly what you are looking for.

There are also photos of skin rashes you can get after a tick bites you.

“This is the first health application for smart phones that could have an immediate impact on a major disease” Fish said.

Proceeds from this app will support the American Lyme Disease Foundation based in Lyme.
