Malloy Picks Dr. Jewel Mullen for Health Dept.

Two hospitals could split with Blue Cross.

Governor-elect Dan Malloy has named Dr. Jewel Mullen as his choice to lead the state Department of Public Health.

Mullen, a Guilford resident with Master's degrees from Yale and Harvard, said avoiding health problems is key to public health in the state.

“Everybody needs really, really good preventive care. Keeping people healthy in the first place, so that we don't have such an emphasis on what we’re trying to control now, which is dealing with chronic diseases the way that we do,” she said.

Mullenhas been directing the Massachusetts Bureau of Community Health and Prevention and Wellness. She is board certified in internal medicine.
