15 fire departments across Connecticut are collecting non-perishable food donations Saturday as part of a statewide "Day of Caring & Compassion".
Gov. M. Jodi Rell visited the Kensington Fire House in Berlin Friday to promote the drive to replenish the state's two main food pantries.
"Police officers, firefighters and paramedics have always had a special place in our hearts as childhood heroes, as the heroes of television and movies and - especially since 9/11 - as the heroes of real life," Governor Rell said. "But this weekend they will show themselves to be heroes in yet another way as fire departments in every corner of the state help us fill the shelves of FoodShare and the Connecticut Food Bank.
Rell said food banks in the state have reported a surge in demand, as much as 30 percent in some areas.
