American Airlines is shutting down its Windsor reservation center, so the 500 people who work there will be looking for another job.
"American has had to come to this decision because of the current situation, and we have to cut operational cost," said Billy Sanez, a spokesman for American Airlines.
The current situation is the poor economy where people are traveling less, and the number of flights have been cut about eight percent in the last year alone. So the Windsor call center, which has been operating since 2002, will be shut down in September. But American Airlines says there is hope for some of the people who work there.
"We're giving employees the option to work from home or to relocate to another one of American Airlines reservation offices either in Dallas, Tuscan, Ariz., or Raleigh, N.C.," said Sanez.
If they relocate to another office, employees will receive similar pay and benefits. If they work from home, the pay and benefits change because American says the job changes. It's up to the employee to decide what's the best option. But either way, American says its customers will still be served.
"Customers will see no difference because they'll always have access to our great reservationists all across our network," said Sanez.
As far as the actual building goes, it's still under lease for the next two years. The company has yet to decide what to do with it come September.
"We're going to be working with the management company to see what's in the best interest for this building, but that's in the future to see what's going to happen," said Sanez.
