Most people in Connecticut support same-sex marriage, although the margin is small, according to a new poll.

The newly released Quinnipiac University poll shows 52 percent of Connecticut voters back the State Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage in the state, while 39 percent do not support it and 9 percent remain undecided.

According to those surveyed, 43 percent of voters said same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, while 39 percent say they should be allowed to form civil unions but not marry, and 12 percent say there should be no legal recognition of same-sex unions.

When it came to the topic of amending the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage, 61 percent of Connecticut voters opposed. Meanwhile, 33 percent were in favor.

When pollsters broke it down by political parties, Republicans support such an amendment, 49 to 46 percent, while Democrats oppose it 73 to 23, percent and independent voters oppose it, 58 to 34 percent.

The poll also broke down the gender divide: 56 percent of men and 66 percent of women oppose an amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
