Dad Accused of Stabbing, Choking His Baby Girl

Cops say he was trying to get back at his girlfriend

A 35-year-old man has been accused of stabbing and choking his 8-month-old daughter because he suspected his girlfriend was involved with another man, Waterbury police said.

Orlando Figueroa assaulted the child, whom friends say is named Keilyn, around 5 a.m. Friday morning at their residence on French Street, police said. He told them he did it to hurt and get back at his girlfriend, the child’s mother, over the alleged relationship, police said.

After choking and stabbing her twice in the back and neck, Orlando Figueroa went upstairs to tell a neighbor and then took off to his other apartment nearby, police said.

When police found him, he had the couple's 18-month-old daughter at knifepoint, police said. She's in DCF custody.

Keilyn was initially taken to St. Mary’s Hospital but was airlifted by Lifestar to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, where she is listed in critical but stable condition.

The 18-month-old was not hurt, police said.

Police charged Figueroa with criminal attempt at murder and two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

He is being held at the Waterbury Police Department on a $1 million bond and will appear in Waterbury Superior Court on Monday morning.
