Man Killed When Car Plunges Into River

Bridgeport police are investigating how and why a car went into the Pequonnock River on Sunday, killing the driver.

Police said they believe the man drove through a warehouse parking lot off Lindley Street, over an embankment and into the river.

There were skid marks in the driveway where the green Mercury Sable went into the river, firefighters said.

The fire department used a crane to retrieve the man’s body from the icy water behind a building on North Washington Avenue about 1 p.m. Sunday, the Connecticut Post reports.

Police have not released the name of the driver, but the registration indicates that a Bridgeport resident owns the car.

"We are not sure right now exactly what happened," Bridgeport Fire Capt. Luis Rivera told the Post. "We got a call from a caller who spotted the car."

The caller insisted the car was not there the day before.
