The family dog is being credited for saving an Old Saybrook family when the pet woke them up after flames broke out, fire officials said.

The fire started around 3:30 a.m. at the Willard Ave. home. The dog began barking, waking up the family. The fast moving fire grew to two alarms and gutted the home.

Frigid cold temperatures and gusty wind hampered firefighting efforts, according to the fire department. The home is also next to a marsh, which also caused problems.

A spark from the fire blew across the street, starting another fire, but firefighters put it out.

No one was hurt in the fire.
