Thousands of students and visitors are celebrating the beginning of spring UConn Spring weekend as the three-day Spring Weekend event started Thursday night.

Nineteen criminal arrests were made Thursday night and 104 tickets were issued for motor vehicle violations.

Three of the arrests were for DWI,and Nikita Guryakov, of Hamden, a 19-year-old student, was arrested, accused of assaulting two UConn police officers. There were 35 medical calls and 18 people were taken to the hospital to be treated for intoxication.

Guryakov is being held on $100,000 bond and will be arraigned Friday in Rockville Superior Court.

The police officers were sent to the hospital with minor injuries to their face and head.

Police monitored everything from a command post and said, despite the arrests, they felt the first night went very smoothly.

“We respect their right to enjoy their weekend and we’re not here to interfere with it. We’re here to make sure they have a safe good time,” State Police Lt. Paul Vance said.

Typically, Thursday is known as “Kill a Keg” night at the Carriage House apartment,” Lt. Buddy Conroy, of State Police said. Anywhere from 10,000 to 14,000 people showed up and that's what happened Thursday night.

Police expect things to just get busier over the weekend with the beautiful weather.

The party ended at midnight Friday and picks up again Friday night.

State police planned to keep guests without credentials out of dorms and keep non-students off campus.
