After a swell of support, a Southington goat herder may just get to keep a small herd of goats on his Prospect Street property.

Daniel True has options on his effort to keep the animals. Town Attorney Mark Sciota said he told True that he has a choice on what action he can take to preserve the herd that he's owned since 1997, as reported by the Record Journal.

Sciota said True plans to file a request for a variance with the Zoning Appeals Board for his 2.5-acre property. True was issued a cease-and-desist order by the Planning Department because his residential lot is too small for farm animals under the town's zoning regulations.

Two different petitions began circulating in support of allowing True to keep the goats, in fact, one was started by a 5 year old girl. Emelia Pettit loved to feed the goats on her walks and started her petition in early November. Since then, about 200 signatures have been gathered.

The appeals board is expected to consider True's request in about three weeks, Sciota said.
