The granddaughter of labor and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez was to speak in Connecticut Wednesday afternoon.

Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the programs director for the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation, was holding a lecture at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic.

Rodriguez began volunteering with the United Farm Workers at age 5, and it was there that she was first exposed to the plight of working people, according to a release from the university.  Her grandfather is credited with founding the UFW.

The lecture begins Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Paul E. Johnson, Sr. Community Conference Room in the Eugene Smith Library.  The event is open to the public and admission is free.
