Montville, Stonington, Griswold Evacuate Residents

Several towns have evacuated areas as waterways crest.

Stonington and Norwich have declared states of emergency. Montville has issued a voluntary evacuation for residents. Based on the Town of Montville's emergency operations plan and the level of the water at the Rand Whitney Dam, officials are issuing a voluntary evacuation for residents on Maple Avenue, Pequot Road and Route 163, below the dam.

The Montville Resident State Troopers and Montville police will be going door to door in this area and recommend residents leave until the conditions change.

By Tuesday afternoon, Griswold first evacuated four streets, including Sheldon Road, South Main Street, Anthony Street and Carley Avenue, and then added more. By Tuesday afternoon, more than 100 residents had been evacuated.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell activated 150 National Guard Troops.

The state’s Emergency Operations Center at the O’Neill Armory in Hartford opened at 4 a.m. on Tuesday morning and will remain open indefinitely.
