Feeling a little tired today? Most of us in Connecticut are a bit sleepy, according to a sleep study released Friday.

Only 28.5 percent of us feel like we always gets enough sleep, and almost half of us are not getting enough pillow time for anywhere from one day to two weeks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study.

The problem seems to be so prevalent that you can find sleep specialists wherever you live. There are at least 22 sleep centers in Connecticut, including the Connecticut Sleep Lab in New Britain and the Eastern Connecticut Sleep Program at Windham Hospital, which has a support group for the sleepless and those who love them.

It’s probably of no surprise that Yale has a sleep medicine center.

In case you have any question about whether you have a sleep problem, Yale breaks down symptoms that you need sleep help. Here are some:

  • Habitual snoring coupled with restless sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Repeated automobile accidents
  • Depression and mood changes
  • Memory loss and lack of concentration
  • Obesity coupled with daytime fatigue and sleepiness

As you reach for that second cup of coffee, you can feel grateful that you don’t live in West Virginia, where 1 in 5 people said they did not get enough sleep any night in the last month.

Ladies, we’re worse off than the men, nationwide, and it’s prompting the CDC to recommend that doctors add our sleepiness assessment when we go in for a checkup.

The good news is that you’ll be able to sleep when you retire. More than 40 percent of retired people said they slept well over the last month, so here’s hoping to our 401ks repairing themselves.

To feel rested, here are some tips: Get seven to nine hours a night, do nothing stimulating for two hours before you go to sleep, avoid caffeine, nicotine and booze before bed and sleep in a dark, quiet, well-ventilated space and avoiding going to bed hungry.
