State Troopers Perform Heroic Rescue

Three Connecticut State Troopers are being hailed as heroes after jumping into frigid waters to rescue a woman trapped in a submerged SUV.

Pauline Pemberton, 63, of Somerset, Mass., was driving on Interstate 95 in Old Lyme Wednesday afternoon, when her Toyota RAV4 was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer, according to State Police.

The force of the crash sent her SUV rolling down and embankment where it overturned and landed upside down in several feet of water, trapping her inside.

Trooper First Class Gary Cipoletta, Trooper David Malek and Trooper Dawn Taylor arrived just minutes after the crash.   They ran down the embankment and jumped into the water to find the driver.

The Troopers pulled Pemberton from the SUV and found that she was not breathing.  They began CPR on the woman until EMS crews arrived.

Pemberton was rushed to the hospital where she was listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.
