UConn's President Resigns for New Gig

UConn President Michael Hogan is making a career move.

Hogan met with officials at the University of Illinois and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday and accepted the job as president of the University of Illinois. He'll begin his new gig in Illinois in July. His resignation from UConn is effective June 30.

"It's with a degree of sadness that I'm leaving, but I can do so knowing that we've accomplished many of the goals that the Board of Trustees set out for me when I began my term as UConn's president three years ago," Hogan said in a prepared statement.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell was surprised by the move.

"Many, including myself, are deeply disappointed that he is leaving the university at such a critical time, particularly on the heels of the landmark financial investment we have just made to the UConn Health Center.  We assumed President Hogan's commitment to UConn was a long term one. It should have been," Rell said.

The Board of Trustees issued a statement on Wednesday morning about Hogan's departure.

“We're grateful for the strong leadership Mike Hogan brought to UConn over the last three years. We've had many successes during this time, including establishing a bright future for our Health Center, launching a major capital campaign, increasing our research portfolio by over 25 percent, and admitting stronger and more diverse students each year,” UConn Board of Trustees Chairman Lawrence McHugh said in a statement released on Wednesday morning. “We all wish Mike the best as he transitions to the University of Illinois...”

Hogan has strong roots in the Midwest.  According to his biography on the UConn website, Hogan was born in Waterloo, Iowa and served as provost at the University of Iowa before coming to Connecticut.  He also spent 17 years at Ohio State University.  He has been UConn's President since 2007.

Hogan will replace Joe White, who resigned amid an admissions scandal last year.
