Three people were sent to the hospital after a wrong-way crash shutdown I-395 in Plainfield for almost three hours Saturday.

Eighty-three year-old Philip Parent of Danielson was traveling  in the wrong direction and heading southbound on the northbound side of I-395  around 5:30 p.m. when his Dodge Neon collided with a Toyota Corolla carrying 60-year-old Sally Lockwood and 52-year-old Alfred Ault, both of Norwich, near exit 89, said police.

Parent and Lockwood were transported to Backus Memorial Hospital in Norwich. As of Sunday evening, Parent is listed in serious condition and Lockwood is in good condition, according to hospital officials.

Ault was transported by Life Star helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI. His condition is unknown.

The highway reopened just before 8:00 p.m., said Department of Transportation officials.

Police do not know if alcohol was a factor in the crash or if charges will be filed at this time. The accident remains under investigation.
