Governor M. Jody Rell acknowledges a standing ovation as she begins her State of the State address in front of the legislature in 2009.

Lou Rell, husband of former Gov. Jodi Rell, died at the age of 73 after a long battle with cancer.

He was a retired Navy and Airline pilot who served his hometown of Brookfield as a volunteer firefighter and as a police commissioner.

Their son Michael issued a statement today stating Lou Rell passed away this afternoon at a Florida hospital with family members by his side.

In a statement, Governor Dannel Malloy said:

"Lou was devoted to his family, and their loss is felt by countless people throughout our state.  Governor Rell, her family, and the Brookfield community will remain in our thoughts and prayers in the coming days."

The Rell family said funeral arrangements are currently being finalized. Services will be held in Connecticut.
