A retired Norwich Police Officer and bystanders jumped into action after a man set himself on fire at a gas station on West Main Street in Willimantic on Saturday night.
According to police, a man doused himself with gasoline from a gas pump at Chucky's Gas Station.
The gas attendant quickly shut off the gas pumps when witnesses alerted him.
Bystanders grabbed fire extinguishers from the gas station and extinguished the flames burning the man and those that engulfed the gas pump, police said.
Willimantic Police, firefighters and paramedics responded and the man was transported to Windham Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Willimantic fire marshal's office and the Willimantic Police are investigating.
