Suicide Watch Ordered for Man Who Lost Part of His Tongue

Police tackled the suspect to the ground outside a medical clinic.

A Stamford man who police said lost an inch of his tongue when a woman bit it off during an alleged attempted rape is on judge-ordered suicide watch.

Gerard Michael Landon, 46, was arraigned in Stamford Monday and Superior Court Judge Robert Genuario ordered a mental health evaluation for him.

Stamford police said Landon pulled a woman down an alley and forced his tongue into her mouth during an attempted sexual assault on Thursday night, but the woman bit off part of his tongue and escaped.

Authorities found the tongue piece, but it was too late for doctors to try to reattach it, the Stamford Advocate reports.

Landon's lawyer said he doubts his client is competent to stand trial. He is jailed on $550,000 bail, the Associated Press reports.
