A 15-year-old riding a bicycle was seriously hurt when he was hit by a driver who police believe was driving under the influence in New Britain Sunday.

New Britain police said the victim, Jose Alejandro, was riding a bike on Corbin Avenue near Lincoln Street when the crash occurred around 1:30 a.m.

Alejandro was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and he's in a medically induced coma.

The driver of the car, identified as 24-year-old Natalie Marie Torres, of New Britain, was charged with DUI, risk of injury to a minor and using a handheld electronic mobile device. Torres’ 2-year-old and 3-year-old children were in the car at the time of the crash but were not injured. The children are with a relative, police said.

Torres' blood alcohol content was more than two times the legal limit, according to court documents.

"I want to show her a picture.  This is what you did to my baby. My baby," Precious Pabon, Jose Alejandro's mother, said.  "He's only 15 years old.  He almost died if they didn't do the surgery for him."

Bond for Torres wast set at $500,000 and she is due back in court on July 17.

A 16-year-old riding with Alejandro was not injured and is cooperating with police.
