17-Year-Old Student Riding Skateboard Struck by School Bus in Meriden

A 17-year-old Meriden student was seriously hurt but is expected to survive his injuries after being hit by a school bus Friday afternoon.

The Wilcox Technical High School student was on his skateboard crossing Coe Avenue when he was struck by the bus around 2:30 p.m. Police say there were buses traveling in both directions on the street when the incident happened, which might have obstructed the view of the student and driver of the bus that struck the child.

“The larger school bus was stopped that was going Eastbound so her view was obstructed somewhat when the 17-year-old male crossed the crosswalk there,” said Lt. Tom Cossette, Commander of the Meriden Police accident reconstruction unit.

The student was flown to Hartford Hospital for injuries to his legs, ankle and head. His condition is considered serious, but not life-threatening.

Both buses traveling on the street were carrying high school students, but no other students were hurt. Students on the bus were taken off, interviewed by police and put on another bus to go home.

Investigators said they have a video of the incident from Platt High School that they will review.

A division of the Connecticut State Police that handles accidents involving school buses is also assisting in the investigation.
