If only it stayed in the sewer system...

Crews spent Wednesday morning cleaning up a sewage spill in Middletown.

Twenty-thousand gallons of untreated water flowed out of a valve on River Rd. around 7 a.m., said Guy Russo of the Middletown Sewer Department.

The valve was accidentally left open by a Sewer Department employee, Russo said.

The spill was in an industrial area, and much of the liquid made its way into the Connecticut River, according to Russo.

He said there were no health alerts being issued, and that while it was a large spill, it was cleaned up in an hour.

The state Department of Environmental Protection is also investigating.
