3-Year-Old Found Wandering Alone Near School

A bus driver found the boy on Congress Avenue in New Haven.

A 3-year-old boy was found walking alone outside a New Haven elementary school on Tuesday morning.

The driver of a Connecticut Transit Bus saw the boy walking alone on Congress Avenue, not far from the John Daniel's School, a pre-Kindergarten and elementary school, at 7:40 a.m., police said.

The driver stopped the bus, saw no adult with the child, brought the child to the bus and called police.

As this was going on, the boy's mother came by and saw the driver helping her son. The mom, son and New Haven police went to the school and school officials said the boy had left the building after telling his teacher he needed to use the bathroom, according to police.

School officials said an aide realized almost immediately that the boy was missing, assumed he was wandering the halls and immediately began looking for him.

He was out of the building for less than 10 minutes, school officials said, and Principal Gina Wells is reviewing the school’s policies and procedures.

The boy was not harmed.
