A 3-year-old is in serious condition after she was struck by a tree branch in Voluntown on Friday, according to fire officials.

Authorities believe the branch had broken during a wind storm and was hanging loose from the tree until it snapped off and fell on the child. She was playing outside on her birthday when it happened, firefighters said.

Deputy Fire Chief John Gileau said the child was “banged up very, very badly” but did not have an update on her condition.

No additional information was immediately available.
