A nearly six-hour standoff in East Hartford ended early Thursday morning with a man being wheeled out of a home on a stretcher.

The standoff was on Higbie Drive.

Police said Luis Garcia’s girlfriend ran to neighbor’s house and called police around midnight after a domestic dispute with Garcia, who they said mentioned a grenade.

For hours, police tried to negotiate with Garcia, but he barricaded himself in the house and refused to leave his home until 5:15 a.m., when he surrendered, police said.

During the standoff, there were sounds of firecrackers going off and neighbors were evacuated at one point as a precaution.

They have since been allowed back inside and no one was hurt.

Garcia is in police custody.
